Default XA2 models that were bad??

I have had an XA2 that I picked up from Magnolia about a month or so ago for a great deal. I have read all the bad press about the firmware update to 2.8. I went ahead and updated the firmware to 2.8 anyways and have not had 1 problem since. I have it sending 1080P/24 to my Pio 5010 which accepts it and displays it great. I must have viewed 20 or so movies on it since (old and newer releases)and have not had 1 problem yet. I am curious which model #'s or build dates are generally seen as the bad ones?

It only has issues on certain movies at 1080/24 that I have heard about. Namely a "stair-stepping" issue on some scenes, one was in MI:1 I think. The reason is has these issues is that it's trying to do the 24f at exactly 24.000 frames per second and it's supposed to be 23.935 or something. And also that the video hits the Reon chip at 1080i and is then de-interlaced and then sent out as 1080p instead of going directly from the source at 1080p to the TV. You may never notice the issues.

You're both confusing matters. The problem with firmare 2.8 is that it causes severe jaggies on discs with AVC compression (many Paramount titles, including Transformers, but not M:I-3) when run at 1080p24 resolution.

This isn't a case of certain units being bad. It's the firmware that's bad. Firmware 2.7 does not exhibit this issue.

If you don't use 1080p24 output, you won't see a problem. If you don't have any AVC discs, you won't see a problem. But if you meet those criteria, it's a big problem.

The M:I-3 staircase is a separate issue and is unrelated to 1080p24 output. That one happens at all resolutions.

Interesting, I have watched I think 7 or so Paramount movies and have never noticed a problem on my XA2 running 1080P/24. I will test some more.

Paramount titles vary between AVC or VC-1. Hit the Display button on your remote to find out the compression codec being used.

Chapter 5 of Transformers is a prime example of this artifact.
