Default I want to upgrade to 7.1 audio

Is the upgrade from 5.1 to 7.1 really worth the effort of running the extra wires and buying the extra speakers? Is the change in sound quality noticeable? Just looking for some opinions on those that have had 5.1 and 7.1 setups on their audio..

depends on how nice your 5.1 system is.

i went from a crappy old Aiwa receiver to an Onkyo 705 and the difference is night and day.

the 2 extra rear speakers are subtle, but noticeable to me.

How many movies do you have with 7.1 soundtracks? There's your answer.(probably less then 5/80)

If the room is large enough to support 7.1 then it is a nice addition.

If your going to get much better speakers for a 5.1 vs. the extra spent on a 7.1 I'd take the better speakers hands down. For home theater the 2 speakers that get the most attention are the center and the sub. If either of those can be upgraded to a better quality speaker I'd take that route first.

Also as Michealo is saying going from a lower quality receiver to one with a better amp section & processing section or adding a stand alone amp to your current receiver can also bring new life your overall experience.

This is also true as only a handful of movies get mixed beyod 5.1. I must say though that Dolby Pro Logic IIx added on top of the 5.1 mix does produce a very good 7.1 experience. Just don't expect a ton of 7.1 discrete mixes anytime soon, hopefully this will change soon on Blu-Ray as the space is easily there.

Seems new BR releases are having 7.1 more often. I just ordered the additional speakers myself to go 7.1. I can't wait to get my BR player and here those DTS-MA/PCM 7.1 tracks!

I would always upgrade my speakers before I just added more speakers. A better quality 5.1 set-up trumps an average 7.1 set up, JMHO.

I just installed my additional 2 speakers last night. My reciever is a Denon 1908. It does not decode advanced codecs. Only LPCM. As far as I can tell, my reciever will only add PLIIx to 2 channel PCM. There is a big difference in the sounds from 5.1 PCM to 2 channel PCM + PLIIx. I'll need more time to get used it the new sound and then see which I prefer. I am immediately noticing more vocal coming from the front L/R. I'm not sure I like it, sounds more hollow this way. However all surrounds now have much more sounds going through them. 5.1 PCM just had a few sounds here and there depending on the movie. I can't wait to get my Blu player and output some native 7.1 PCM!

I ran the Audessy EQ, but I need to do a little independent speaker level adjustments to all rears still.

I gotta say, I watched a couple minutes of a Hockey game last night, and the surround effects sounds awesome with PLIIx processing. I will assume this will hold true for all sports games.
