Default Just bought an A-35 and i have a few questions...

I just odered an A-35 off amazon and i have some questions about it.
I am somewhat new to the HD-DVD tech end of things but I have been watching HD-DVD's on my 360 add on since October...and as the title suggests, I just bought an A-35 as a backup for when I get some higher end equipment in the future.

Let me start off by stating the other components i am working with (as of now).

Vizio - L32 1080i HDTV
Logitech - Z-5500 speakers

1. I read a post somewhere on these boards that the new 2.0 firmware will produce a great amount of "jaggies". What is the most stable firmware for the A-35 to date??

2. I keep seeing 1080/24p (from what I have read this seems to be the best video/audio that you can get). How would I hook up my equipment to achieve this?? (if it cannot be done with the current setup, I will definately be getting equipment that supports this in the future)

3. Right now I have my xbox 360 going to my HDMI switch and then to the TV (the TV only has 1 HDMI port...the cable box is also plugged into the HDMI switch). I have the 360 hooked up to the Z-5500 speakers via optical.
How good is 1080/24p really?? Is there a noticable difference in audio clarity compared to optical??

1) You want FW 1.3

2) Your TV needs to Support 1080P/24

3) I went from Optical Sound to HDMI sound and to me (a non believer at first) I noticed a big difference..

Oh ok...so your TV just needs to support 1080p/24 and im guessing as long as its hooked up through HDMI it'll work ok?? No settings to play with??

Damnit, I cant insert a link because I don't have 10 posts. I was gonna put up the link to my TV on Vizio's web site.

I just noticed that it is has an optical out port.

If i were to run the optical cable from my TV to my Z-5500 speakers do you think i would get better quality sound (because its hooked up through HDMI), rather than my 360 straight to the Z-5500??

Or would it basically be converting it back to optical?

^sorry if thats a dumb question haha

Pretty sure your L32 doesnt support 1080p/24 since it doesnt support 1080p.

1. Firmware 2.0 will be fine for you. The issues normally appear with 2.0 AND 1080/24p.
2. Your TV doesnot support 1080/24p, doesn't even support 1080/60p.
3. You're trying to compare a visual aspect to a sound aspect. 1080/24p does not affect the sound. If you mean HDMI versus optical, with your system it won't be noticable.

1. Once I get it, I'm just gonna make sure it works, then pack it up for the future. For now I'm gonna use my 360 add on. So I guess for the future when I have a TV that supports 1080/24p I should use firmware 1.3 instead of 2.0??

Yea, I was confused about 1080/24p. I thought it was video and sound so thanks for clearing that up.

I haven't updated my firmware on any of my 3rd gen players and they have performed flawlessly. The A-35 advantage is you can get lossless via analog and you get DTS-HD support from the player. I would wait and see if a new firmware comes out that corrects the AVC encode "jaggies" and go that route. I have a 42" Vizio in the bedroom and have tried various resolution settings and see no difference in any of them so you can set your player at 720p or 1080i or 1080p and see the same image on your TV. I would hold off on this update until a new one is released.

Personally I would go ahead and start enjoying the A35. The 360 add on does not upconvert standard DVD if you are still watching any of those. Even with HD material I think you would see a better picture in general even with the HD DVD's. Just my humble opinion.

I was thinkin about using it right now for everything and actually packing up the 360 add on. The only thing is that my Z-5500 supports 1 optical input which is in use by the 360. Since the 360 will probably be sitting on top of the A35 I may just switch the optical plug on the A35 or 360 end depending on which one I'm using...but thats bound to get annoying sooner or later lol.
