Default A1, A2, XA1 or XA2?

Which HD-DVD is the best and why? I like the price of the A1 best but are a bit hesitant to buy first gen hardware. The A2 on the other hand is attractive being a second gen machine but no TrueHD 5.1 out without having an HDMI receiver (and I'm not about to trade my 2 year old Onkyo just yet).

And the XA2, what is it like $899? But it has 1080p!!!

I've read lots (THANKS EVERYONE) and have checked out a few other sites. I've decided against the 360's add on in favor of a true digital / HDMI hook-up so are in the market for a stand alone HD-DVD player.

BluRay is too expensive at the moment and frankly, I haven't been overly impressed with it's picture thus far when seeing it in action at Circuit City.

By the way, what's the dealio with Circuit City? Kind of seems like they are favoring Blu Ray which is kind of tickin' me off. I went to their store the other day and asked to look at HD-DVD players. The clerk asked me why I'd want to do that.!? He indicated that "all" movie companies are making Blu Rays while only a few studios are pressing HD-DVD's. So I chalked it up to a bad clerk. Then I call every CC in town only to learn that they have 1 HD-DVD player available online only (or in store pick via online purchase). Grr.! I despise BB but they carry HD-DVD players. Maybe I can check around for a higher end electronics store as well.

So, back to my main point, should I purchase an affordable A1 or something else and why? I plan to buy a 1080p TV in 45 days and currently own a 720p/1080i LCD. But this purchase is obviously more geared towards the 1080p.

Well to take advantage of the 5.1 analogue outputs I’d either go for the A1 or the XA2. Obviously the latter is more ‘future proof’ in terms of HDMI 1.3 and 1080p – but it depends whether your current equipment can take advantage of the latter.

Agree for pure price i went for the A1 i wont have any equipment to use 1.3 hdmi and i wont be upgrading tv in the near future, plus the added true hd output for the A1 made it a worthy choice.

Will the A1 ever get upgraded to 1080p through frim ware or something? The XA1 is 1080p? Since I'm buying a 1080p TV, should I be overly concerned with is (meaning will I notice a considerable difference between the 1080i A1 and the 1080p XA1)?

looked up the XA1 at Crutchfield and it doesn't mention 1080p functionality. Am I missing something?

No, neither 1st Gen Toshiba has 1080p60 output. As has been extensively discussed elsewhere (not looking to reopen this, I'm no expert), having 1080p60 output is not really a big deal if you have a 1080p set with good de-interlacing capability. Most of the HD-DVDs are 1080p24 on the disc, and for film based content like that you should get the frames accurately rebuilt when you bring it to the display in 1080i. I've got a 1080p DLP, and the PQ from my A1 set to 1080i is wonderful.

That's what I was hoping to hear and also what I've read a few other places. Thanks for confirming!

A1 is my choice at the moment based on price and audio output (need a analog 5.1 in order to fully realize the better HD sound quality). I'll have to look into that Mitsu - I see you also mention it in my 1080p HDTV thread.

Similar experience at CC. But when I asked the salesman he looked at me and sai"I don't know why we don't have HD DVD Player's" He asked his manager who then said"b/c we don't" Which left a bad taste.
