Default Post your HD DVD Super Bowl ad idea here!

All in good fun now- if you were in charge of marketing at Toshiba, how would you make a Super Bowl ad and promotion to breathe some new life into the format?

Here is what I would do:

This week only!

Get an HD-A3 HD DVD player with two free movies in the box... a copy of Transformers at check-out... and 5 free by mail.

This week only... for $99!

My reasoning is thus:
  1. If they are going to place a big bet, best to do it now. They will be selling for $99 eight weeks from now if they don't do something fast and then it WILL be a clearance sale.
  2. "This week only" will create urgency and drive strong sell-through.
  3. Guarantees lots of copies of Transformers sold for Paramount. They will be happy.
  4. Expose a lot of people to the format. I bet they could sell 500,000 players in a week with such a promotion.

Cost? If they subsidize the players another $50 that is only $25 million... 500,000 copies of Transformers for another $25 per, that's $12.5 million... total outlay $37.5 million + the ad. Peanuts when you are talking about survival.

Of course they would need a lot of copies of Transformers. Paramount would have had to have started replicating soon after CES. I don't think we will see this, but it is fun to think about.

OK- let's hear some other ideas. If you were in charge at Toshiba, what would you do to try and keep the format alive?

An ad that showed people with "another player" having problems with the movie playing, finding out that advertized features didn't work or aren't included with "this player" and friends looking at him like he's a little strange. Next scene is someone putting a DVD in an HD DVD player, friends at his party being wowed by how good it looks... "You think that looks good? Watch THIS!" Puts in an HD DVD movie, the music SCREAMS and the screen EXPLODES and the party goes WILD. Quick scene back at "the other party" where people are bummed, complaining.... Back at the HD DVD party, show a slew of HD DVD titles and the new low price with free HD DVD movies. You want it? COME GET SOME! Oh yeah baby ...

Three words. Steven Spielberg's Catalog. Yep, release his Paramount/Dreamworks and Universal titles, especially Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park.

But, but, but those are "catalog titles!"

Yeah, and tell me they wouldn't fly off the shelves.

What they should do is have a commercial showing most of the new releases, and then show quick previews of

Beowulf and American Gangster along with their future release hopefuls Jurassic Park Indiana Jones Back to the Future and Lord of the Rings
