Apparently a Japan only release, for the moment at least. You can read about it here:
http://www3.toshiba.co.jp/hdd-dvd/su...f2_ver2_8.html

Of course, you probably can't read about it, but here's what it does (since you probably can't read Japanese):
1. You can now select 1080p/24 Hz or 1080p. You can select either 24 or Auto with 1080p. In other words, you can force it not to do 3:2 pulldown or set it to auto detect whether to do it or not. It seems that you should select 1080p/24 only if you've been having trouble getting it to use that mode with a compatible display.

You can see a picture of what the new menu will look like:
http://www3.toshiba.co.jp/hdd-dvd/su...f2v2.8note.pdf

2. AACS incompatible HD DVD-R videos made overseas are now supported. HD DVD-Rs made on a HD DVD recorder are not playable.
3. Language codes changed. Indonesian: ID, Hebrew: HE, Yiddish: YI, Javanese: JY.
4. Playback has been improved.

It doesn't seem to be available for download. The instructions for updating describe using the update feature in the player connected to the web directly. You can also request a CD, but that doesn't help anyone who doesn't live in Japan, I'd imagine.

These things always start in Japan and end up over here within a week or two depending on a few variables. I have seen them the next day and I have seen them take a few weeks on one.

Glad to see 2.8 will come out and it looks like it adds what people really want with the 24FPS forced.

The 24fps has worked fine for me. What problems have people experienced with this?
