Default A20 Vs A30.

Hi guys,

my dad is nearly ready to buy himself a HD-DVD player (was a hard work I tell ya ). I looked for some of the European ones at Amazon. There are 2 players which would come in handy.

There is the EP10 (equal to the A20) and the EP30 (equal to the A30).

So how does a A20 compare to the A30? Is there such a big difference? The difference in pricing is gargantous, that's why I wonder.

from what i have read on the forums the hd a20 isnt a true 1080p set.

I dunno but thats what i heard. I would get the ep30 if your folks have the money.

If money is tight-- believe me-- than the ep20 will do.

Im still convincing my parents that either hd or br is high def and will work with ur hd tv lol.

I'm also wondering about this, I'm in the process of getting myself a backup player. And so far the choices are between a EP10 (same as a A20) and a EP30 (same as the A30).

And I've also read a lot of different opinions about this, most say they are almost identical players. The EP10/A20 I have on hand is a tad cheaper than the EP30/A30, and I also know I can make the EP10 regionfree on DVDs.

Are the EP30 worth the extra bucks, or are they identical players?

On price alone it's the EP30, many outlets are basically giving it away at 80-100, EP10 still seems to hovering at 200 for whatever reason

Price is not an issue, I can get the EP10 a tad cheaper than the EP30. I just wonder if any of them are better in one way or another? Spec wise they seem to be identical.

Well i still stand by my claims i made on AVS that the EP30 is the better upscaller and thats why i replace my EP10 with an EP30. HD PQ is about the same in general in my opinion but during fast camera pans, EP-10 doesn't handle such shots to well.

And of course the EP30, supports HDMI 1.3 and 24fps output, which EP 10 does not (unless a firmware release fixed that problem).

Thanks a lot for the observation, I'll probably consider the Ep30 for my backup player then. As long as the EP35 don't drop in price, or I can find a XE1 for a decent price.

If anyone else have some more input into this, I'll appreciate it. I have heard people claim the EP10 is a better player, and want to be sure that this ain't the case.

I own both the A20 and A30, so I'll lay out some of my observations:
  • The A20 is heavier than the A30 and is a little bit deeper (maybe an inch or so).
  • The A20 has a much nicer faceplate, with a flip down door covering the bottom half of the player. Build quality and overall appearance both go to the A20.
  • SD-DVD playback on both units to my TV over HDMI appears identical. I have cracked open both units, and the ABT upscaler chip has the same part number on each unit.
  • The A20 has a better HD DVD-ROM transport/drive than the A30. I say this because it is much quieter when searching/skipping chapters, and has decidedly less problems playing my SD-DVD and HD DVD collection. I own several discs of both types that will not play in the A30 but run just fine in the A20.
  • The A20 has a bigger/better remote control (same as the A35) that has buttons for your TV as well.
  • The A20 has an S-video output, the A30 does not.
  • The Display on the A20 is roughly twice the size of the A30, and has a much nicer look to it.
  • Both players output 1080/24.
  • The A20 is maybe a second or so faster when loading discs.

Once again, these are my personal observations based on my experience with both players. It seems to me that the A30 is a 'value' version of the A20, and that a bunch of things were value-engineered out of the A20 to make the A30 cheaper. I have updated both of my units to the latest (but not greatest) firmware (A20-2.8, A30-2.0) for these observations. I am told the A20 has better sound capabilities as well, but I'm not currently running a modern sound system with these units.

IMHO, I'd rather have an A20 than an A30, but I don't feel the A20 is worth a ~$100 more. FYI I shelled out $108 for my A20, and $213 for the A30.
