Default Resident Evil (Sony) will not upconvert on A2-is there a reason?

I rented the latest Resident Evil movie (standard DVD-not available for HD DVD). When I put it in my HD DVD A2 player, a message came up saying that the player is unable to upconvert the disc and that it will display the movie at 480p.
This is the first time I've seen this. My player is hooked up via HDMI so I know it's not my connection. It's always been able to upconvert other standard DVD's. But now that I think about it, this might be the first Sony movie I've watched on my HD DVD player.
I know the movie is put out by Sony. I wonder if it is encoded not to be upconverted on HD DVD players? Anyone else notice this conserning this or other standard dvd's?

That is the weirdest thing i have ever heard. I can't think of a reason why the disc wouldn't upconvert. Unless there is a problem with your TV/Player HDCP compliance...I don't know what that problem could be if it is upconverting everything else. Perhaps i will head to the movie rental store and try it on my A2's (both) and see what happens.

All I can guess is that it is part of the copyright protection they have been working on for a long time.

This same thing happened to a guy I work with that has a A2 but I just assumed it was because he is using component video and not HDMI, is your tv HDCP compliant? (im guessing it is if it has HDMI)
