Default Help with high def audio on onkyo 805

Hey guys,

Didnt want to hi-jack another members thread but i have a similar question.

I have a HD-A20 and an onkyo tx-sr805 receiver.
Whenever i play a movie with DTS HD or Dolby true HD my receiver doesnt say so. When I when i press "display" on my hd dvd remote it shows that the audio is true HD and output is bitstream.

does this mean im getting true hd?

thanks in advance

hey man,

I can toggle through and get to "Direct" it says PCM on top in small fonts
when I check the audio output it says MCH PCM 5.1 48khz

shouldnt it light up with Dolby True HD ?

when i play my x360 it automatically lights up with Dolby Digital.
I just dont understand why it doesnt do that with my A20 or PS3

I have the 605 and hd-a20!
First off all, no matter what you do the 805/705/605 heck even the onkyo905 WILL NOT say DD true hd oTS HD because your HDDVD player CANNOT BITSREAM the raw dd true hd or DTS HD! IT can decode it internally!
You can still get true hd with the hd-a20 if ou have the machine decode it internally-set the digital out hdmi to pcm or auto and digital out spdif to pcm on your setting. For the onkyo, go to harware setup then to hdmi and select hdmi audio out "off"! This setting when on confuses the receiver asto whether your tv is the main speaker or not/

If your settings are correct on the receiver and hd-dvd(hd-a20) the receiver will say DVD or VCR" MULTICHANNEL"! This is should be the only display you should see On HD DVD for regular dvds it'll say Dolby digitla or dts

I believe same is true for the sony bd-300. Only PLAYERS thet are hdmi 1.3 with proper firmware will be able to bitstream and you'll get your sought after dd true dtshd logos!

If you followed the above settings for the hd-a20, the player is decoding the ddtrue hd and sent it to receiver as linear pcm thats why the hdmi output is only limitedto auto, pcm and downmixed pcm-which you dont want! FYI the hda20 CAN ONLY decode dts hd -1.5mbps
