Default VOD services using HDDVD player?

Looking at the 'ethernet' description on the Toshiba HDDVD product page it says:

"Connect your HD DVD player to the internet to allow it to receive updates that will support future applications and services."

Are all of these HDDVD players "trojan horses" that will bring internet video distribution to the masses?
