Default TrueHD vs. DD+ over an optical cable?

I've got an A3. Unfortunately, for the time being, I'm limited to using a crappy Sony HTIB surround sound receiver, which only accepts optical input (no HDMI). Is there any benefit to still playing TrueHD tracks over the DD+ or standard DD counterparts, or do they all get downgraded to the same 640kbps DD with no difference between the various audio tracks?

All downgraded to 640kbps.

If you want TrueHD or DD+, you would atleast need a receiver that can handle multichannel PCM over HDMI. The cheapest receiver in this budget range would be the Sony STR-DG810 (not the 710).

Choose what sounds best to you. To bad they took out the DTS options on the A1 and A2. But I think that might have more to do with licensing.
I don't think Dolby likes DTS showing up on peoples receivers. <:-|

I agree the Down sampling to DTS 1.5mbs is a huge plus with the hd-a2 ..Too bad the hd-a3 does not do it.... Yeah looks like Dolby had somthing to do with that! It def effects the sound quality!

Actually the 710 does process MPCM over HDMI. There is a setting that has caused some confusion (if set up wrong you only get the number of channels that your TV supports:http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...4#post11825144). The 810 may be a better choice for other reasons. Most comments I've seen recommend the 910 or the Onkyo 605.

I'm planning to get the STR-DG710 after Christmas. If it doesn't do PCM on HDMI I'll come back and eat crow.

It depends on what the soundtrack was encoded at. Most likely you are still down-converted, but still I think 1.5Mps sounds awesome. In many cases you sre getting the full DD+ i.e. (DUNE). Good call on the A2 I feel is superior to the A3 not only for this reason but for build quality also.

I think the A2 is a much better unit than the A3 for this reason. I also like the look of the A2 much better than the A3

A4 anyone? lol

If it sounds good then it doesn't matter so much. Later on in life you can upgrade to an HDMI receiver.
