Are you trying a DVD from the wrong region?

First of all what kind of cables are you using?? I have the A2 and I know when I put a regular DVD in it flashes like you said for a second then a message is displayed saying it can only be in 480 this is because I'm running component cables, apparently to upconvert higher you need HDMI or a DVI connection because they are digital as opposed to analog if I'm not mistaken. If you have neither HDMI or DVI on your TV this is pretty much what you need to run it on, looks fine to me could be better but it's not and HD DVD so what can you expect all DVD's even upconverted with a digital signal look like crap to me now. I'm no HT pro but that would be my guess, you're better off posting this in the home theatre section those guys know their stuff.

Moving to hardware to get a better response. I also edited the thread title so it was more specific.

I get that same flash signal with hdmi, it's because you are say, on a TV channel, and switch to the DVD once it's inserted (as we all do to avoid long HD-DVD logo burning the screen) but actually, it outputs in 1080p.
