Default XA2 16x9 Format....help??

I have many non enhanced widescreen movies on DVD and of course with the player set to 1080i the picture is in widescreen but inside the 4x3 square. Does anyone know how to fix this so the picture is actually filling the entire screen without switching the players input to 480p?

if you are talking about letterbox movies, they will never fill the screen if they are OAR 2:35:1. Look in the menu of your player. There are settings on the A2 for either 4:3, 16:9(letterbox) and some other setting. I can't remember off the top of my head. anyway, switching between these settings may get the screen to look like you want. I'm still a bit confused what you are asking about.
On a ws tv if you watch a non-anamorphic 2.35:1 dvd you get massive large bars. If it's anamorphic 2.35:1 you will get small bars. that's why it really sucks to try to watch nom-Anamorphic dvds on ws tvs. Some tvs will let you zoom the image, but usually NOT over hdmi. If you connect your player using component you might be able to zoom the image. Let us know if any of this works for you.
I don't believe the resolution setting has anything to do with it, but I could be wrong.

OK.....went I watch a non anamorphic widescreen movie I get the widescreen image inside a 4x3 ratio screen........so black bars on the left and right side. I want the player to take these type of widescreen movies and show them fully with the massive large black bars on the top and bottom. The only way i seem to get that now is changing the player to 480p. Keep in mind I am using HDMI

did you change the setting in the player menu to letterbox? That should do it.

I have it set to 16x9 in the setup menu and no change.

ok that's what I'm saying. Try CHANGING this setting. There should be two other choices:

4x3
4x3 (letterbox)

try the letterbox setting first, and see what happens.
Let us know if either of these choices helps

Non-anamorphic releases will do this. You can try what they said here and try set it to display like a 4x3 TV. But, usually you're at the mercy of whatever zoom function is on your TV.

Or...buy the HD version of the disc, or at least a Anamorphic copy.

It's hard to believe the XA2 doesn't have that third option. weird.

Well that's just retarded!!! LOL

I wish Toshiba would fix something like this.....my Panasonic up-converting player when set to 1080i showed the 16x9 image fully with non enhanced DVD's, they were not stuck in a 4x3 image! It's annoying cause anytime I want to watch non enhanced DVD's I need to switch the output to 480p then it's fine
