Default Questions regarding HD-A1 & PC monitor....

Greetings

I tried (unsuccessfully) to hook my HD-DVD player, the Toshiba HD-A1 to my Sony 19 inch LCD PC monitor. I bought an HDMI to DVI cable as the monitor accepts DVI. Hooked it up and no picture.

Have I done something wrong or is this even possible?

Thanks for any help

Your monitor must support HDCP over DVI in order to get a picture. If your monitor does not support HDCP then you could try analog if your monitor has inputs for that.

Sorry to be a noob here, but I am unfamiliar with HDCP. I have learned what it is from Wikipedia, but can't find any information in the specs for my Sharp Aquos to discover whether it has it. Anyone have an idea how to find out (Sharp website not forthcoming). TIA.

And additionally, what does anyone have to say about DVI Magic as a fix to Tim Glover's situation? It may apply to mine as well. Thanks.

Not sure, which is why I was asking our good advisors out there. I came across several references, including on engadget.com. It appears at first gloss to be an older and possibly not legal solution. Here is the link at the bottom of the Wikipedia page on HDCP:

I'm suspecting that my Sharp LC-30HD4U (manufactured Dec 03) is like your monitor in that it is digital DVI but not compliant, which is why I am also asking on your thread.

DVIMagic was to be a box that sat between the player and the display device that would take the video signal, strip out the HDCP, and then send the HDCP-less signal to the display device.

DVIMagic was released by Spatz-Tech, but does not appear to be available anymore. Nor is it listed on their website. Could be due to legal restrictions, but not sure.

As for the Sharp LC-30HD4U, doing a Google search returns squat. I'd say if your manual doesn't specify HDCP support (my Fujitsu plasma for 2003 does specify HDCP over DVI and my HD-A1 works with it) then probably a good guess that it won't diplay a HDCP signal.

Thanks, Overseer, it helps to know that. Maybe I can get a friend with the Tosh to bring it over and see if it works before I try buying one.
