Default How is the 360 HD DVD player?

I am contemplating getting this or some other sort of HD player, whether it be HD-DVD or Blu Ray ..... So I was wondering how this is compared to other HD-DVD players visually and with the audio also...

If you have the 360 I would definitely get the HD DVD add on since it pretty cheap and you can get it at 179 and get 5 free hd dvd or you can find it on this forum for fairly cheap as well. The picture quality and audio quality of this is great and seemingly comparable to other stand alone. Not being a videophile i got the hd dvd add on for the xbox 360 and the PS3. Both set ups did not disappoint me never had a single problem with either of them. Back to you question the 360 hd dvd add on is a great machine.

I have the add-on hooked up to my HTPC, and am loving it. With the latest build of PowerDVD Ultra everything looks fantastic.

You won't get Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby TrueHD through the 360 add-on player, but it still sounds phenomenal through DTS. The imagery is absolutely stunning, it's honestly superior to any theatrical experience in my opinion.

Unless you're an absolute diehard audiophile with state of the art equipment and demand the top audio fidelity available, the 360 HD DVD player is an incredible value and excellent performer. Especially if you live in the States and can claim the 5 free HD DVD offer...!

Picture quality wise the movies look amazing. I like mine but I am still gonna buy one of the new standalone toshiba players when they come out in a couple of months. I just don't think consoles play dvds as well as standalones. Also, you can't really hear it much when the tv is turned up loud but during quiet parts of a movie you can hear the hum of the 360. This is not a big deal for everybody, but it is rather annoying to me. Don't know about the ps3, but it has gotten good reviews as a blu-ray player. It is probably the route I will go if I ever decide to get into blu-ray movies.

my add-on has recently been giving me a few problems, out of the last 4 discs purchased, it's had problems playing 3 of them, and usually at some point the add- on turns itself off and i have to restart the movie.
I'm considering getting a stand alone when the prices come down (they are still a lot more expensive in the UK than the US)

I've had a great time with my add-on. Like others have said, if you're not so concerned about the high-resolution audio, but want an affordable, easy way into HD DVD and you already have a 360, I think it's the way to go. That and the 5 free movie deal makes it that much sweeter.

So is the sound bad? or is it just the same as regular DVD players?

The sound is absolutely amazing. Because most of us are coming straight from DVD's I will make that comparison: the add-on has deeper bass and more ear ringing highs and mids. I have noticed that I have to turn the receiver volume up a little more than I used to have to with SD DVD's but it seems to be worth it when action scenes come in clear with no distortion or level imbalances. If you do have a thing for lossless audio fork out the money for a Lossless receiver and a standalone, I'm sure you won't be dissappointed. Most people can't tell the difference though. I am absolutely amazed with my add-on. Oh BTW, you'll want to hook it up through VGA rather than Component. It will upscale your Standard DVD's if you do. And it looks better when watching an HD DVD, unless you have limited VGA Picture setting like my TV does.
