Default Possible Price Drop @ CES

Just saw this in my RSS reader, Toshiba has a announcement planned on Jan. 7th. Toshiba's CEO of digital media has said that the next price point will be $399. Will they announce this next week?

so question comes down to then, they just announced a $999 version too. What do you get with one machine verse the other one or hell, just the current unit if anything verse the $999 version. what are the differences?

I hope not, the price points are low enough as they are (well compared to BD anyway). Is this a sign that things aren't going so well...?

You really think a price drop is negative rather than positive?

It's all about shipping units and getting an installed base advantage over Blu-Ray. If Toshiba were to introduce even a $100 price drop on their existing HD DVD players, it would be huge. By the end of the year they could easily be going for even less than that.

It depends. A price drop would no doubt increase the installed user base, however this is likely to be in reaction to general apathy towards both HD formats. Whilst this was expected to be a niche sector, it may have been worse than expected.

At the end of the day, I'm only guessing as to why they would do it. What is clear is that it will be us who benefit.

Well, either that or they have a price drop partnered with a new studio or two.

Seriously though, I can't say I will be surprised if we see a price drop. I'm just wondering if it will affect the A2 or will it possibly be another deck. I can't see them already releasing a new deck so a price reduction on the A2 would be ideal. I'd seriously consider selling my HDV5000 for it should that happen.

What I am wondering are who the other companies are that will be with Toshiba when they make their announcement.

What would be REAL interesting would be dropping the price of the XA-2 also. Can't stop thinking about that Reon chip

I think the price drop is already occurring, check it out, the A2 is selling for $399 at Amazon.
