Default Wait for second-gen Toshibas?

A friend recently asked me if he should buy the HD-A1 or wait for the A2... I personally would have a hard time sitting on my hands til late December, but wondering what other people think.

Looking at the specs on on A2, it's missing 5.1 phono outputs, which will limit your audio output to HDMI or Toslink.

The AX2 looks way better, 1080p, and its fully loaded on the audio side, if they don't want to stretch to to an AX2 then i would go for a AX1 or the cheaper A1.

[I have the A1]

Kind Regards

Considering you can find an A1, brand new I might add, for as low as $350 right now, I feel the A1 is the overall better bet.

I guess it all depends on whether the analog 5.1 output is important to you or not. If you already have a HDMI equipped receiver which allows you to receive the TrueHD audio over HDMI, then by all means go with the A2 for its faster load times and sleeker looks and most importantly a more useable remote for use in the dark.

I'm personally waiting for the A2.

Intel Core processors and more updated chipsets probably will make for a better performing player. I'm not concerned with the lack of analog outputs because I'll be looking for a low cost HDMI receiver. There should be plenty of options announced at CES 2007.

I don't give a rip about HDMI 1.3 and I don't care about 1080p outputs as well. Those features will be important when I plan to go a bit more upscale with my equipment in a few years.

The A2 sounds like an excellent bargain right now.

I have a Denon AVR 2807 so I dont need the 5.1 analogs. I have pre-ordered an A2 from Value Electronics for $449.99, two free HD-DVDs of your choice, no tax, shipping included. I couldnt resist. I was holding out for at least a second generation player. Really looking forward to UPS delivering this bad boy!

What's the main update on these second gen player? HDMI 1.3 and the design, only?

Only the higher priced XA2 model will have the HDMI 1.3 support. Other than that, the regular A2 will just sport a sleeker design, faster bootup time, more bug fixes but no analog output.

Thanks for your answer HTFreak. Yeah, you're right HDMI 1.3 is only on the more expensive XA2 model.

Does it really motivate such high price for those extra features?

For me, I will use the HDMI for both sound and image. So I think the cheaper A2 will do it for me. Just need to upgrade my soundsystem first

I see the HD-XA2 as the the player to get if you don't see yourself upgrading for a while for the player but perhaps have plans for AV Receiver and HDTV upgrades in the near future.

It has RS-232 bidirectional ports for linking to controllers and it has a 120bit video DAC that may improve the video appreciably.

Me personally I'm going to go with the A2 at $499 and uses the savings for a HDMI AVR. When I truly need HDMI 1.3 and 1080p/24/48/72 support in a few years there will be the product I need at an affordable price. No worries here.
