My A2 manual states that DVD-R is supported but I have not tried one.

Hmmm???? You would think it would.... what does the player say on the panel when you put the disc in?

If I try and use any + disc is says "no disc". According to a PDF I just found online, it only says DVD-R and DVD-RW.

Kind of sucks since DVD+R DL discs are a lot cheaper than the -R dual layers. The cheapest I can find -R DLs are 12.99 for 3, while +R DLs I can get 20 for about 30 bucks.

The manual for my XA1 says it only supports -R DLs, but as you say +R is so much cheaper I took a chance on Verbatim +R DL 2.4x and they play fine on the XA1. I burn them at only 1x w/ Nero6.

I've played Verbatim 2.4X DL DVD+R's on my HD-D2 without problems (burned at 4X using Nero6 and an el-cheapo Lite-On burner)..

My A20 plays all the DVD+R's that I try (& I have a lot of them) burned on my Lite-on drive.

I'll have to try again, I tried a Divx movie I converted to DVD standard that I burned on a verbatim DVD+R single layer and the toshiba said "no disc", when I tried it on my PC it came up in Nero Showtime as a normal DVD. So I assumed the tosh didn't read the format. I'll try burning a normal movie and see.
