Default HD-A2 - 720p or 1080i

Which resolution would be better?

I have a Samsung HLN617W and i have the A2 hooked up from HDMI to DVI. The manual says it will do 1080i as a supported resolution and it is also selected in the A2's menu but i only get 720p. Is there a good enough reason to go 1080i?

1080i has more lines, but they are interlaced. 720p is a cleaner picture, but with fewer lines. I really cant tell that much of a difference between the two so..I think you would be fine with just 720p,imho.

Usually you want the players output to match the TV however I would tell you to try both and see if one looks better than the other. On my 720p set I feel the output looks a little better when my player is set to 1080i.

the endless debate continues. try to match native resolution of tv set if possible. and remember its only "fake" 1080i anyway. The main reason a TRUE 1080p set is preferrable to have is so you can have "true" 1080i. With The 720p/1080i models its purely preference depending on source material.

always output the source's native resolution. if you're watching HDDVDs use 1080i from the toshiba, your TV will make it 720p. case closed.

If your TV is 1080p use the 1080i. The TV will deinterlace the 60Hz 1080i signal and turn it into a 30Hz 1080p signal. So you will get the same exact quality of picture that you would with a 1080p player (contrary to what sony's marketing team would like you to think).

On the other hand, if your TV only does 1080i or 720p, then I don't know which would look better. I'd guess the 1080i would, but just try both for yourself and see which you like better.
