Toshiba America said this week that it plans to offer a notebook PC with HD DVD playback in the third quarter, as well as a single model with an HD DVD writable drive.

In addition, the company said that two models would gain Dolby Home Theater or Dolby Sound Room technology, to enhance the multimedia experience from users.

The announcements also disclosed some previously confidential models to the Toshiba lineup: the Satellite P205, Satellite X205 and Qosmio F45 will be the company's first mainstream mobile solutions to incorporate HD DVD drives, while the Qosmio G45 will be the first U.S. notebook computer with a writeable HD DVD optical drive. The G45 will be available to consumers in time for the back-to-school season, while the other models will be available during the third quarter.

Toshiba, like its rival Sony, has been involved in a cutthroat battle to increase the market share of its preferred next-generation DVD format. Toshiba's news came a day after U.S. movie rental giant Blockbuster announced that it would give preference to the Blu-ray next-gen format in its retail stores.

"In the realm of high definition nothing compares to the capability and quality that is available through HD DVD," said Mark Simons, vice president and general manager, Digital Products Division, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., in a statement. "Due to manufacturing efficiencies being achieved for HD DVD, we're able to add this revolutionary technology into our mainstream consumer notebook lineup at affordable prices."

The new HD DVD enabled Toshiba Satellite and Qosmio notebook computers will have estimated single unit prices that will range from $1,449 to $3,199, Toshiba said, depending on model and configuration. The Satellite P205, Satellite X205 and Qosmio G45 will be equipped with high-resolution 17-inch diagonal widescreen displays, while the Qosmio F45 will include a 15.4-inch widescreen display.

Each notebook will be shipped with an HDMI port, the company said. The Qosmio G45 will be capable of 1080p output, while the Satellite X205 will offer 1080i output, Toshiba said.

Toshiba did not release additional configuration or pricing data, saying that such details would be released closer to the systems' launch.

The company also said that the Qosmio and Satellite X205, two of Toshiba's high-end notebook computers, will feature Dolby Home Theater, while the Satellite U305, Satellite A215, Satellite A205, Satellite P205, and Satellite M205 will feature Dolby Sound Room technology. Each technology will improve the multimedia experience by upgrading the sound quality, Toshiba said

Why would you put new HD-DVD Hardware news in smackdown?

Edit : The smackdown thread is more general, this is about the actual models that are coming out in the 3rd Quarter of this year. For those who want to talk smack then you should go to http://forums.highdefdigest.com/showthread.php?t=10331
