Default First post: Audio Connection Question

Hi all, I've been on the site for months but decided to join the forums today. I hope you can help me with this quick question.

I have aToshiba A1 and my videois hooked up via HDMI while my audio is hooked up to my 5.1 reciever via a toslink connection. Upon reading about the goodness of the sound hooked up via the analog outputs (as my receiver has no HDMI) I was wondering if it is really that significant.

I ask because I was at my local Best Buy to pick up cables (the guy recommended the Monster 600 series) and at $50 per set times three that becomes a pretty expensive proposition.

Any thoughts on the cable selection or the difference between toslink and analog set-up would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

There are so many posts describing the difference between the two you shouldn't have a problem finding your answer.

I do want to say though, the 5.1 analog is the way to go, especially on HD DVDs that have TrueHD. You might want to also hook it up using the optical for SDVD playback in order to get DTS for the analog connection isn't as good on SDVD playback.

TrueHD has a night and day difference though. Use this thread as a start:

Thanks Bee. I'll remember to search the topics first next time.

Any idea if the choice of cables will make much of a difference?

I usually buy decent cables for my components, but as I said I'm not sure if it makes sense to spend $150+ on cables...at least until recievers can truly process the signals via HDMI 1.3.

Hey Ash,
I ordered these cables from Amazon for my 5.1 analog setup. More than adequate for me and only cost $32.

Since I have under 10 posts, I can't forward the link but here's the product information: Acoustic Research AP-036 Performance Series 5.1 Audio Cable.

Hope this helps.

Jim

Thanks Jimmy,

I'll look them up. I suspected that unless you have a state of the art system the Monster cables I referenced above were a bit of an overkill.

This is a great forum that I've found very helpful...and you sirs are no different.

Now if we can only get past the format bashing things would be perfect..LOL.

Thanks again.

ASH, if you do decide to go the analog route, make sure you have firmware 2.0 installed or you will not reap the benefits.

Question, I have a 7.1 set up with my Pioneer 1015.

I use analog connections.

Now when I do so, It appears that my rears come up to my side surrounds as opposed to my back surrounds. Any idea how to rectify ?
