I've got 4.0 on my A30 and A3, and no problems. Works much better than my HD Drives on the 360.

Blu-ray certainly does region free releases, I believe about 75% of Blu-ray titles are region free and most of the 25% coded for a single region are Fox releases. All HD DVD accomplished by not offering the option of single region coded releases was to guarantee no releases requiring coding for a single region would ever see the light of day on HD DVD. There was no way to force a company that doesn't own rights or doesn't want to sell releases coded for all regions to go ahead and do it anyway. It was just a blunder to not offer the option in my opinion.

There must already be about 4 times as many all-region Blu-ray releases as there were all-region HD DVD releases and the gap will just grow larger.

Thanks for the info on the Blu-Ray region and I didn't know about the Fox releases. I was in Best Buy yesterday and a lot the Blu titles I have on HD most I picked up cheap after they killed the format. Now waiting to see how this 3D format works out? I checked out a demo Panasonic 3D tv w/glasses it was awesome!!

Depending on your audio equipment and your desire to 'tinker' you can load A35 firmware on your A30 and that will allow you to bit-stream DD+ and other DTS high def codecs. Just not the big two TrueHD & DTS-MA. There is an old thread in here by Viking61 (I think) that tells you how to do it and where to download it. If you don't care about streaming DD+ audio then it is not worth the hassle and standard firmware 4.0 works like a charm!

Right I saw that. Does anyone know if the remote control for the hd-a20 and hd-a30 are interchangeable? Thanks.

Just got my HD-A30 today. Where does it show what firmware is currently on the player?

Setup, General, Maintenance, Update (or something like that)

It will show which firmware you are on and ask if you want to update. You can then answer No.

Oh I see how it works. Well I didn't have it connected to the internet and it said 1.1/1.1 so I guess it's 1.1 Any reason to update to 4 if I don't have any problems?

I think version 4.0 resolved some playback issues. But you can of course try it on version 1.1 and if it works ok you can keep it on that version.

What were the playback problems? Just watched Old School. Didn't see any problems. Does the new firmware improve load times or anything or improve image quality?
