I do not believe you are doing anything wrong.
The A30 is incapable of bitstreaming newer audio codecs in their native state.
It sounds like you have the A30 set to bitstream multi channel pcm, which means the player converts whatever digital audio you select to multi-channel pcm and sends that down the hdmi wire. I expect it sounds just fine!

If you want your new receiver to light up its Dolby TrueHD icon when playing a HD-DVD with a lossless audio track, you'll need to find and pick-up a player that supports that . . a HD-XA2 (or Onkyo clone) or A35. In all honesty, however, I doubt it will actually sound any different.

Hey guys,

I just picked up an A-30 and also just want to make sure I'm setting things correctly sound-wise. I understand my Onkyo won't light up with the pretty lossless audio light or anything, but just want to make sure I'm sending things over the best way.

I currently have the Audio through HDMI output set as "Auto" (rather than PCM or PCM 2-ch). On the HD-DVD display, it will say DD+ (or something like that) and my receiver shows Multich 96 khz. From what I understand, the AVR will show that same audio info rather I'm listening to DD+ or TrueHD 5.1, right?

Does it sound like I have the A30 audio settings right?

Thanks a ton!

+++OLD THREAD+++ Anyone ever come up with a definitive answer for this? Does the A30 pass Dolby TrueHD? I've got mine hooked up to my Denon AVR-3311CI via HDMI, Firmware Version 4.0; set to Bitstream and Auto.

on the Denon Display is MULTI IN +PLIIxC, and MULTI on the A30, regardless of what is selected; using Top Gun for the TrueHD 6.1 and dts es 6.1 (have a HD-XA2 connected to my Denon AVR-3312CI)

the best 2 choices are send dts or Dolby digital CORE ONLY via Toslink (Optical); or set to "Bitstream" and "Auto" for
MULTI channel as above, which gives the best sound, but it's NOT Dolby TrueHD, or even PLUS...but, you'll be hard-pressed to tell the differ...

Why don't you let the A30 decode TrueHD rather than bitstream it? I believe only the A35 and XA2 bitstream the lossless codecs bit for bit (the A30 is one of the few HD DVD players I don't have).

no matter what the settings are, and even when selecting TrueHD or dts ES, the A30 display reads MULTI; any ideas? I've a XA2 and BD-UP 5000 x 2, but no A35...yet...

that's HDMI, or with SAME settings (Bitsteam & Auto) on A30, lemme look, HDMI & Toslink with settings of Digital & Auto on 3311, it will read Dolby Digital or DTS (not TrueHD or DD+ or DTS ES) (no coax output)

A30 info button says it's decoding & passing TrueHD, but A30 face display still says MULTI...
