399.00 GBP = 786.308 USD

1 GBP = 1.97070 USD
1 USD = 0.507435 GBP

What a deal.....

Using exchange rates is a silly comparison of value. 1 GBP doesn't necessarily buy $1.97 worth of US goods in the UK. Minimum wage in the UK is equivalent to $10.54 USD an hour.

That's why we inhabitants call it 'Rip Off Britain'.

Whilst the price for the PS3 is a disgrace, let's not kid ourselves that Microsoft are any better. They all want theor 'pound' of flesh, in every sense of the word.

There are quite a few details to take into consideration.

United States:

GDP - per capita (PPP)

$ 43,500

U.S. Minimum Wage:

The federal minimum wage is $5.15 per hour now, although workers under age 20 can be paid $4.25 an hour for their first 90 days. If the bill in Congress passes, it will be gradually increased to $7.25 over the next two years. A states may also set a minimum, in which case the higher of the two is controlling. Some states have minimum wage laws ranging from $2.65 in Kansas (for some jobs not covered by the federal rate, i.e. those that receive substantial gratuity), to $7.93 an hour in Washington; some cities and counties have living wage ordinances of up to $15.00 an hour although the groups of workers it applies to are often limited.

5.15 USD = 2.61329 GBP

United Kingdom:

GDP - per capita (PPP)

$ 31,400

U.K. Minimum Wage:

5.35 per hour for 22-year-olds and above (except those within the first six months of their job and receiving accredited training); 4.45 per hour for 18-to-21-year-olds and those within the first six months of their job and receiving accredited training; 3.30 per hour for under-18s who have finished compulsory education; none for those who have not yet finished compulsory education (the age when a person finishes compulsory education is either 15 or 16, depending on where their birthday falls in the school year)

5.35 GBP = 10.5432 USD

So, the U.K. minimum wage may be more, but the overall purchasing power of a U.S. citizen versus a U.K. citizen, in their respective economies, is still stronger. So, the morale of the story is the PS3 is pretty damn expensive, regardless.

All electronics, including competing consoles, are more expensive in UK than US, at least at launch. People were complaining of the same thing at 360 launch.

Isn't part of that price due to tax being applied and tariffs on incoming goods?
