Default Report: Online features double game sales, Wii trails

This is why I love Xbox live

http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=133148

According to a new report published on Thursday, video games with online components such as Xbox Live bring in twice the revenue as those played offline.
"Developers who are not embracing online opportunities to a greater level are leaving money on the table," said Geoffrey Zatkin, president of Electronic Entertainment Design and Research.

The study, which examined more than 400 games for Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii through June 1, found that titles supporting online multiplayer bring in twice the amount of sales than those without. Even games with minimal online support tend to make almost 25 percent more revenue than offline games.

Additionally, the report established that 77 percent of Xbox 360 games incorporate online functionality, followed by 23 percent of PS3 titles and just 2 percent of Wii games despite the latter console being the most commercially successful of late.

Huh...I woulda thought the 77% would have been higher and I deffinately thought more than 23% of ps3 games would have online.

The article is wrong more then 23% of ps3 games have online. And with that disputed, I would tend to think the rest is questionable.

Do we not take into account that the Xbox 360 software which makes up a huge chunk of the "online games" has actually been on the market longer?

There is only 1 Wii game that currently has online functionality, Mario Striker's Charged.

There are more titles coming, but online is definitely not the Wii's strong suit.

Kinda hurts the argument of the xbots who claim that "not many people are online"...........The bottom line is the future is Blu-Ray disc with larger capacity, and the future is online gaming. Indeed the present is both of those things. Anyone embracing DVD-9 and offline gaming is living in the last decade.

ps: The 23% of PS3 games are online must be a typo. Its much higher than that.

Since when have Xbox people said online isn't the future? That's why sports guys and FPS gamers have chosen 360.

I think they are totalling up the total market, not % of individual games. 77% of online games are on the 360 ect.

Too bad that doesn't mean they don't sell twice as many consoles. I think Nintendo could care less, they do what they do and do it well, and at a profit...and always have.
