Default PS3: the great trophy robbery

I thought this might happen, just didn't think it would be so quick...

Quote:
Hackers strike again: a home application for the PS3 that can be installed on hacked consoles is succeeding in breaking through the trophy mechanism of the console’s games and award its users unlimited trophies.

The PS3 trophies are a sort of virtual achievement mechanism: the console’s games award trophies to players that can perform certain actions in the game. Thus for example a player that succeeds in finishing the game can win a silver trophy if he succeeds in doing it without strikes he’ll receive the gold trophy as well.

The trophies can later be shown to other PS3 players, which makes collecting them a real hobby with some console owners who are interested in attaining a larger trophy collection tan their friends and brag about it.

Now it seems that players can achieve trophies without an effort. The application takes almost every game you put into your console and “suck” the various trophies out of it. According to reports the application has been successfully tested on games such as Buzz Quiz Tv and Pain.

A “trophy heist” is an expected side effect of Sony, that was until recently considered to be unhackable, until a few weeks ago hackers announced in a convention in Las Vegas that they succeeded in getting the encoding key for the console, through which the PS3 can now be hacked – completely and in an irreversible way.

Sony are working hard to thwart the breach. A number of days ago the company announced that it is working on an update to the console that will completely block it (although the hackers say its impossible) and followed this by a suit against the hackers in court.

The company has also announced that they are aware of the breach to their trophy system and that it will soon be repaired by the software update for the console.

Right now, it is not clear what the implication for gamers using the software to achieve stolen trophies will be. It is not inevitable that Sony can track those players and block their consoles for access to online services – as done by Microsoft with gamers who hacked their Xbox 360 console.

In addition it is common knowledge that not all games are subject to the trophy heist and that games such as “Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition” and “Batman: Arkham Asylum” are immune to the phenomenon.

PS3 “Trophy Unlocker:” brings the death of Trophies?

Quote:
The PS3′s been hacked completely thanks to the likes of GeoHot and failoverflow and things seems to be getting worse.

According to a post at NeoGaf, hackers have developed a homebrew app for the console known as “Trophy unlocker” which allows you to get 100% completion in any game, i.e platinum it and sync the date to Sony’s servers (after the removal of CFW), getting you all the trophies without needing the slightest amount of effort from your end.

If this proves true, it’ll really hurt Sony since the temptation to get everything for free might be too hard to resist for many.

Can Sony detect such illdoers? Can they ban their consoles? Prevent them from connecting to PSN? Only time will tell.

Things doesn’t look to be good for them right now.

All this because they nerfed Linux. Hardly seems worth it on Sony's end.

will be surprised if sony can fix it as they claim.
hopping on this shit immediately is crucial before it gets out of control.

Someone on another website just brought up an interesting question, is it possible that our credit card information could be compromised on the PSN due to all the security exploits? Scary stuff.

The only way they can fix all this, as far as I can tell, is to put out a firmware update that will whitelist every piece of software to date, changes the keys and the cryptography, and then only runs either explicitly whitelisted software or the stuff signed with the new keys (same with the trophies). Then anyone that happens to have upgraded to this new firmware, which won't be everyone but a lot of people and all future PS3s, won't be able to downgrade and thus will be unhackable without a dongle again. One can hope.

Whitelisting all existing software can't be easy, and would take a while, but they should be able to get access to all such checksums, being the license holder and all. It doesn't plug every way to write fakely-signed code, but it should take care of all of it. Speed is key.

Of course, they can also do what MS does and just ban anyone that racks up way too many points all at once. But that kind of thing is just a band-aid.

It's not possible, unless you yourself want to hack your console and run credit card-stealing software that some asshole hacker tricked you into running. So it's not actually scary. Just think of another person's PC being overrun with a virus... that doesn't mean they can somehow get into YOUR PC, unless you open some horrible email attachment and run it, or you go to some compromised web site.

Another person hacking their console cannot get at your credit card info, because that's between your console and Sony's servers (which are protected with TLS, which is not, in practice, breakable).

Sony needs to do something ASAP, even if it is a Band-Aid. I don't recall ever seeing achievements being awarded via hacking, did that ever happen?

Thanks for the feedback, RRS. You bring up another question, though.

Are viruses now something we need to worry about on the PSN?

Yes, according to that NeoGAF thread anyway. And yes I've heard of it done.
