Red face GameFly Files Complaint Against USPS

Online game rental service GameFly has filed a formal complaint against the United States Postal Service, reports Shacknews. The complaint accuses the USPS of giving preferential special processing to Netflix and Blockbuster to avoid breaking discs, which it hasn't extended to GameFly. The company requested similar manual processing, but claims it was denied.

The situation is coming to a head now, as Blockbuster moves into renting games through the mail. GameFly claims the manual sorting puts Blockbuster at an unfair advantage. It also claims that Blockbuster sees "a substantial cost advantage" in its distribution. Working with these issues was probably ongoing at GameFly, but Blockbuster's push to include games in their "Total Access" plan spurred the formal complaint action.

GameFly claims they have tried to reduce breakage with higher cost, larger mailers, but it didn't solve the problem. They currently estimate about 1% of discs break in transit. It may not sound like much, but if you're shipping thousands of discs per day at $50-60 per disc, it can add up. The company also complains of lost discs, but gives the USPS credit for attempting to curb the problem, including 19 arrests of postal employees accused of theft.

We haven't heard the postal service's side of the argument, but the complaint may result in GameFly enjoying the same manual processing benefits as Blockbuster. That would be another shot across the bow as the two battle it out for online game rental superiority.

yeah, because we all know filing a complaint against someone, giving them negative publicity, is the way to get what you want.

sometimes the squeaky wheel gets the grease, but other times, it gets taken off for another wheel.

The USPS is, and has always been terrible.

They always complain about hurting and that they want more business, but every single national holiday they are closed, while UPS & FedEx are open and still running. No business in their right mind would choose USPS over UPS/FedEx if they had a choice.

Gamefly is terrible... so is the post office.

It takes Gamefly fucking forever to get me a game. I am seriously considering cancelling.

I've been with Gamefly for 2-3 years and every now and then, I'll get a broken game or nothing at all! It's like the mail just loses it!

I've had a few times when I sent a game and they never get it, or they'll send me a game and I'll never get it.

Same here. When I lived in Johnstown, I actually got my games faster (usually in a day) than I do now that I live about 35 miles closer. I'm in a smaller town and the post office isn't quite as organized or efficient as Johnstown's is I'm guessing. I get my games in 2-3 days at most now, which still isn't bad really.
