Default GFW Live Now Free - Marketplace Coming

Just announced @ GameFest in Redmond today, Microsoft has dropped the subscription fee to their Games For Windows LIVE Gold tier making the features at that level free for all. This is effective immediately across all GFW LIVE games.

They also announced plans to expand the service by adding a marketplace similar to the Xbox Live Marketplace. (I kinda guessed this was coming when Todd Howard mentioned that the PC and 360 would be getting exclusive DLC for Fallout 3.) And also they plan on giving the service much more "PC-friendly" interface and reducing some of the restrictions placed on developers.

Yup. I'm hoping this will revitalize GFW Live. Steam is great and all, but I like that I can contribute to my Gamerscore and see my Live friends while I'm playing a PC game. And I've always thought it should have it's own client with a marketplace and arcade you can access from outside a game.

I really wish the PS3 had Home up and running with some killer online MP exclusives. This would really push MS into making XBL free. I think it should be free. It's more money to spend on the marketplace

It would be nice if XBL dropped the $50 a year playing fee and added more DLC to each upcoming game. That way Microsoft still makes money. They could take half of the DLC income and give the other half to the developers. I would only want this if there were more DLC though.

But I don't really have a problem with it the way it is right now.

Great news, but I agree that I don't mind paying. It's simply the best online gaming service, and just basically $4 per month. Not gonna lose sleep over it lol
