Default I can't honestly recommend MGS4 to anyone (minor spoilers)

Just beat the game last night.

I have to say it was the most amazing and emotionally draining gaming experience I've ever had. The game is definitely a 10, there is no question about it. It lives up to the hype and then exceeds it. I have never had my mind blown away by a video game like I did with Act 4 for instance. I mean, even now, I can't believe what just happened.

But I can't recommend this game to anyone in my heart of hearts.

I think with MGS4 I finally saw the future of video games and it is a future that honestly scares me a little bit. The graphics and motion and atmosphere were so realistic and intense during the boss battles that the game is almost evil to me. Last night when I went to bed I heard a dog howling and I literally, for a good 10 seconds, believed that Crying Wolf was roaming Chicago and I was scared out of my wits. Then I caught myself saying "WTF are you thinking?" and I had to force myself to snap out of it. This scared me and has never happened to me before in a video game, where I kind of lost touch with actual reality for a little bit because my reality BECAME Metal Gear Solid 4. When I shut my eyes to go to bed I literally saw Raging Raven as the first image that popped into my mind, another horrible sight. I spent a good 45 minutes trying to beat this guy and I can still, as I type this, here the "Rage!!!" screaming at me. It's like a freaking demon!

This game is not for children. It may be the most mature, violent, scary game I've ever played in my entire life. Horror games like Condemned don't hold a candle to this as that is horror and violence for violence sake. When I watch a horror movie I don't get scared at all, and no nightmares, because I'm like "Oh that's happening to someone else" and "It's just a movie." Same with horror games--they are kind of silly and almost comic book. But with MGS4 its a much more strange, atmospheric scary and for some reason my brain was believing it much more. Maybe it's the atmosphere and getting engrossed in the story, I don't know.

As far as violence and maturity Grand Theft Auto doesn't hold a candle to this game. MGS4 should be rated as Adults-Only and I'm shocked Sony is bundling this with the PS3. As far as I know this is the only game I'm aware of that tackles suicide. This is the only game I'm aware of where people are constantly injecting themselves with syringes and you are killing women who are suffering. And dropping the F bomb which just sounds like a joke in GTAIV like they are trying to be cool, has so much of a greater impact in MGS4 I noticed. And the boss fight with Screaming Mantis? Perhaps one of the craziest things I've ever seen.

This game would give any child nightmares, and it is way, WAY too mature for them---steer them clear from it. This is in no way a game for casuals either. I was actually going to play this game in front of my parents when I drove up to Milwaukee last week to visit them and I'm glad I didn't. I would have felt like I was watching a porn with them.

My whole point is this though. I think video games are getting to be too realistic and intense and the atmosphere too emotional to the human mind that the body loses touch with reality for a little bit because the game is so close to feeling real. That's the way I felt with MGS4. And because the MGS4 "reality" is a really horrible and scary one and depressing one, it made me feel uneasy and uncomfortable about life in general after playing it. I am normally just a normal, happy guy but last night I went to bed sad, depressed, scared, and what scared me about all this was that in my mind it was all "for no reason" because it was "just a game." As an MD I recognized this as an actual mild version of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. And I'm not sure I want to put myself through that anymore. I shudder to think what some of these games might be like in 10 years and by then my 38 year old body I don't think will be able to handle it, and I'll just have to stick to stuff like Madden!

Wow another useless comment by Master X. You have an awful habit of commenting things before actually using or reading them (as I just posted this 30 seconds ago and there is no way you read it). Kind of like what you've been doing with games I've noticed.

I would probably have to tag the entire middle portion really, but I just read the post and I think you could read it without feeling really spoiled. I mentioned a couple things but nothing really that I would think would ruin the game experience for you IMO.
