Default Digital Foundry looks at Sony's low key introduction of PS2 Emulation to PS4

The article is here:

LINK

Complete with video as well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vA6TdEstNUg Basically, Sony has re-introduced a form of PS2 emulation to the PS4 using these three PS2 Star Wars games as the vanguard. Among the other things the emulation does is up the frame rate, sharpen the resolution, and actually add trophies.

I find it a bit weird that Sony wouldn`t draw more attention to this, but oh well, at least it`s there. This probably does mean we'll see them re-packaging more old games for re-sale on the PSN.

Awwww, I thought the title said "PS3 Emulation" at first. Still, this is nice enough I suppose.

I'm honestly more interested in PS2 emulation at this point since my fat PS3 died and I only have a Japanese PS2.

While still odd timing, I'm expecting an announcement with a bunch of titles at PSX next month.

I love that they're using emulation to clean the games up. Ever since playing PS2 stuff on the PCSX2 emulator I've not cared at all for the idea of just straight emulation when the games can look so much better today.

I think we probably need to wait until processing goes up in power and down in price even more before we PS3 emulation happening. The cheapest way to do it would be to have a processor powerful enough to "brute force" its way in emulating the cell processor architecture without having to actually build all those co-processors, but even then, you'd probably run into the same emulation problems as some games on the PS2 did when it came to super-specific tricks to get the most out of the system.

Even on the original 60GB backwards compatible PS3, Quantic Dream's Indigo Prophecy crashed out at a certain point because of the way it used the PS2 "emotion engine." I'd imagine the case would be even more pronounced for games highly optimized for the PS3.

They won't. PS Now is going to be their bread and butter in a few years.

PS Now is probably, on some level, their PS3 emulator for the moment.
