Now this is exactly what this game needed. Best wishes to all the Shenmue fans and the team working on the game.

My tattoo of a sailor will finally be relevant again.

A theory I heard is that Sony is really the one backing the project, but are using the Kickstarter as a glorfied ad campaign. To make the world aware of it, without having to invest the funds to do so. That way, they can sell it as "fastest Kickstarter ever!" and blah blah.

Makes some kinda sense.

Honestly, I was starting to think the only way to get an ending would be for Yu Suzuki to partner with Telltale.

Either way, Ryu is finally going to leave that cave. I hope there's an easter egg of Ryu being 14 years older and completetly gnarly from living in that cave.

Sounds pretty fanboy conspiracy'ish. My bet is more on someone at Sony wanting to make it really bad but needing the proof of it's still relevance before they dropped the cash. Honestly the internet would have exploded over Shenmue without the Kickstarter, but the Kickstarter did provide some metrics of how much interest there was there.

The people behind this are the same people behind getting Yakuza 5 localized and Grim Fandango on PS4/PSV.

It's not really a conspiracy, Gio Corsi, Adam Boyes and the guys behind SCEA's third-party relations are responsible for it. Gio's gone on record for the last couple of years that Shenmue 3 is virtually their most asked-for title. There's definitely Sony backing behind this. If there weren't, this wouldn't be "PC and PS4" only. There isn't even a XBONE stretch goal.

EDIT: So much for conspiracy,

Sony is a partner for Shenmue 3 (in case it wasn't clear before)

According to Sony’s Gio Corsi, Shenmue III was the game most in demand for the #Buildingalist campaign. Sony met with Suzuki-san at GDC last year, and started the long road to get to the Kickstarter. They figured that the only way the game could be made was if the fans spoke up, and Kickstarter is the perfect place to see that. They set the two million dollars goal, pledging to make the game a reality if that was achieved. Corsi explained that Sony is “definitely a partner” for Shenmue III “the whole way.”
