Default Valve announces the Linux-based SteamOS

    From Valve,
Thousands of games, millions of users. Everything you love about Steam.
Available soon as a free operating system designed for the TV and the living room.

Steam is coming to a new operating system

As we’ve been working on bringing Steam to the living room, we’ve come to the conclusion that the
environment best suited to delivering value to customers is an operating system built around Steam itself.
SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen.
It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines.

    Cooperating system

Steam is not a one-way content broadcast channel, it’s a collaborative many-to-many entertainment platform, in which each participant is a multiplier of the experience for everyone else. With SteamOS, “openness” means that the hardware industry can iterate in the living room at a much faster pace than they’ve been able to. Content creators can connect directly to their customers. Users can alter or replace any part of the software or hardware they want. Gamers are empowered to join in the creation of the games they love. SteamOS will continue to evolve, but will remain an environment designed to foster these kinds of innovation.

    In-home Streaming

You can play all your Windows and Mac games on your SteamOS machine, too. Just turn on your existing computer and run Steam as you always have - then your SteamOS machine can stream those games over your home network straight to your TV!
Steam streaming and free official HTPC OS are the most interesting aspects beyond the fact that it is a move by Valve.

Oh, I consider it the base. This is the beginning of Steambox. I knew they'd launch then OS before they launch the hardware.

Hit. The market is ripe for the picking. I'd be shocked if this didn't take off. And if it doesn't, it will STILL be good for those that don't follow the masses anyways.

Will be very interesting to watch no doubt.

    Spoiler Alert:

    Spoiler:
Gordon Freeman is a smoke monster; Alyx Vance is made of lens flares, and headcrabs will be voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch and Zachary Quinto.

I'm not happy with their involvement with Abrams. I don't like him. But, I can see the appeal from a market perspective to have him involved. The dude did Star Trek and is doing Star Wars. He has pull. It saddens me that Valve is allying themselves with subpar talent...but whatever. Hopefully, it's their writers, and not his. That's all I can hope for.

    If it's a shitty film...it's a shitty film.

I'm kinda curious what game he's involved with. Especially, if it's a Main Studio Valve project.

Sub-par talent? Dude, have you ~seen~ Felicity and Alias?! I mean one of them has the Pink Ranger in it and the other has that dude from Titanic.

What market do you think? Existing PC gamer base. Old PC gamers with slower machines that will work better under the lower overhead of Linux. Console gamers fed up with the incremental step in this generation's performance. Existing people with marginal PC's. People with mid-grade laptops. Etc etc. Add 'em up. Take yer pick.
