Default Avatar uploading

I think I asked this once before but never really got an answer. The avatar size limit specifically says 50x50, yet I see people constantly using images larger than that (some of them very recently uploaded as well and in 80x80 size). Is there a workaround to this that I'm not aware of? 50x50 is way to small!

Now it says in User CP:

Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 80 by 80 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller).

So I guess it has been changed to 80 by 80

Guys, no offense but: Please, for the love of what ever God you believe in, get rid of avatars. They lend a very tacky myspace (and other juvenile crimes against web design) look to the whole site. I surf forums to read the posts, I hate having half the screen taken up by silly distracting jpegs.

I disagree completely. It allows people to quickly identify each other. Say youre looking for posts from a specific person. You can quickly scan the avatars instead of trying to pick out a single name from a blur of other names. Its not tacky at all.

Conversely, that's one reason I don't like them. People can change them all the time, and they distract from the text (i.e. the name) which should be the real identifier.

Not that it's really important....

Yeah, I agree. I use mine to find where I left off in a thread all the time. It'd be a colossal pain not to be able to do that.

You can choose not to show avatars in your own Control Panel, I have them and signatures switched off so I don't have anything but the posts showing. It's less distracting that way...
