Default What is this idiotic "shares" thing that keeps slowing popping out on the right side?

Is there a setting to turn this irritating thing off? I've never seen it until today.

For some reason, the "Shares" bar no longer displays the number of times an article or page has been shared, which was the only thing I found useful about it. An article that I know said had 185 shares earlier today now says nothing at all. Was this a bug or a deliberate design decision?

Firefox browser, 56.0.2.

So, what is the answer? How can we take care of the problem?
