Question PS3 audio problem playing on PC speakers

I am sure this problem has been solved tons of times, I am just stupid. So here goes. I have just bought a PS3, and asked in HMV if I could play using a PC monitor, rather than a TV. Oh yes was the answer! And yes when I got the PS3 home, the video works great..... but my monitor has no speakers!! Stupid me! So I think....and decide to play the PS3 through my PC speaker system. I used the HDMI output from the PS3 to my monitor, so I connected the audio to the other outlet, which has phono connectors at the other end. No worries, I have a phono to mini stereo jack. Plug that to the audio system and I HAVE SOUND!!
But at a really LOUD level, and I mean loud!! So audio output on the PC must be at a much lower rate than the PS3. Even on ZERO volume on my speakers the sound from the PS3 is ear blasting.
My question.....how do I reduce the signal down to a usable level..something electronic in line in my audio output cable....but what!!!? Does anyone have a solution where I still use my PC speakers?
