...and, actually, the STAR WARS series is rumored for sometime in 2011. Since that's not an anniversary date, though, I don't buy it. 2012 would bring us the 35th anniversary of the original film, though, so I bet that's more likely.

It is supposedly going to be linked to the "new" tv series debut on bd.
the "new" trilogy not the original one.
2012 has been rumored for the "newer" trilogy.
as far as the "original" one who knows.

To be honest, I am both surprised and not surprised they are not out on BR yet.

Surprised why? Because Blu-Ray has been around for 3 years now and the movies should have already been released at least twice now.

Not surprised why? It took Lucas 5 years into DVD's life before bringing the movies out on DVD. Hell, Phantom Menace came out on video when DVD was around and it still did not hit DVD until just before Attack of the Clones came out in theaters.

Does it strike anyone else as kind of arrogant to wait this long to release catalog titles? By 2012 the novelty of Blu Ray will have long worn off and I won't care to watch something I've already seen just for the HD factor anymore.

I'd go for the originals but I would hope he wouldn't use the same masters he made the 2004 DVDs with. Special Edition changes aside, the image looks too digitally processed (likely to better match the prequels) and the color-timing is all screwy (Darth Vader's pink lightsaber is the best example of this). Plus, they mentioned that the master was only suitable for standard DVD anyway, so hopefully they start a new remaster from scratch and it turns out a lot better.

I don't think I'd spend more money on those prequels, though, so I hope they don't only release some expensive ultimate set with all six movies.

To be true, as much as the AV quality of these movies would be outstanding on HD, I wouldn't put myself through Episodes I-III just for it. Granted, I'm not the biggest Star Wars fan (only really dig Empire Strikes Back), but I appreciate the historical value, not to mention the influence and impact in popular culture and movie-making in general the original trilogy had.

Being the hardcore Star Wars fan that I am these movies would absolutely shine on BD even using the masters that were done just a few years ago. The Spike HD presentations of these films are a joke as well. Not only do they change the 2.35:1 aspect ratios to 1.78:1, but the quality is not even as good as the upconverted DVDs.
