Default Come And See (simply one of the greatest War films ever)

Come And See is set in WW2 Belorussia and follows the fortunes (or rather misfortunes) of 12 year old Florya
who joins the Russian partisans in their fight against the Nazis.
He experiences an ever increasing series of horrors such as the massacre of his village and family by the Nazis. The kid visibly ages as horror follows horror.
The film's climax is its most difficult to watch sequence though, as a Nazi contingent destroys a large neighbouring village, graphically kill or rape the
inhabitants, and in doing so finally send the poor boy over the edge....

Few films can match Come And See with its harrowing depiction of warfare and its effect on civilians....
Frankly this is a film that can stand muster with the very great war films such as Apocalypse Now and Saving Private Ryan. Indeed, Come And See is a very heavy influence on the latter (with its hand held camera work and depiction of temporary deafness following heavy gun fire) something which Spielberg acknowledges...

Both surreal and graphic, the film follows a path through one of the least filmed parts of WW2 - the horrors of the Eastern Front. The director, Elem Klimov used live ammunition to make the film look that much more realistic, and making the film apparently took so much out of him, that he has to date not made another.
This would be an incredible film to watch in 1080p and listen to in lossless sound. The 5.1 audio on the existing DVD is absolutely superb.
