Default Peter Hyams' Outland (1981)

One of my favourite films from the 1980s was this Sean Connery outing directed by Peter Hyams.
Connery is a Marshall on a mining colony on one of Jupiter's moons - IO.
During the course of his tour of duty, he discovers some highly illegal, and very lethal criminal activity among the colony's managers and workforce.
Unwilling to be bought off like his predecessors, he instead opts for a High Noon style showdown with some hired assassins....

I saw this in 70mm on its release and was blown away by the quality of that print. As most are probably aware, DVD releases of this film have been at best mediocre PQ wise and basically this film cries out for a clean transfer and a 1080p release with either a Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master track. Being a Warner release, I can only guess that the former audio codec will be the choice on any release.

Whatever, this film cries out for a decent remastering on .
Warner Bros please end the wait of those like myself who would love to see it on Hi Def and would snap it up in an instant...

Default Too kind

The DVD version is an absolute joke, the US version is literally mastered from a bad VHS copy. I think it was Hyam's best film too. A more hard scifi look versus Star Trek/Star Wars with a more mature plot. Not sure how many people even know this movie in the US.

If there was a Japanese release of this, I would probably pick that up as I think the movie had a cult following there?

Well hopefully a of the original film will be not so far away now.
Warner Bros are currently well into a remake, directed by Michael Davis (Shoot 'em Up) which would suggest that the original should get a BD release fairly soon, so as to push interest in the remake.

It is a shame that Warner Bros have not asked Hyams to helm the remake, Dack.
