Default A Dry White Season

Simply one of the very best films to depict the former Apartheid regime in South Africa is Euzhan Palcy's stunning 1990 depiction of life under that regime.
Donald Sutherland plays a former football hero, now a teacher living in South Africa who investigates the murder of his gardner and in doing so comes up against Jurgen Prochnow's vicious Special Policeman. Before long Sutherland finds friends and family turning against him as his eyes open to the realities of his comfortable existence in South Africa... Susan Sarandon plays an English journalist but the acting tour de force is Marlon Brando who cameos as a Human Rights lawyer taking on Sutherland's investigation in the courts. Brando is simply a revelation in this role and even gets the accent absolutely perfect, English twinged with a touch of Afrikaaner.
Brando's performance absolutely electrifies the courtroom sequences and he received an Oscar nomination for best actor in that role. How he did not win frankly remains one of the Acadamy's enduring mysteries. Zakes Mokae also turns in a great performance as the activist who befriends Sutherland and his son.

Palcy's crowd sequences rival anything from Spielberg or Attenborough and the sequence depicting the Soweto Riots is incredibly powerful, as thousands of uniformed school children form a sea of humanity that shakes the earth as it approaches the massed ranks of waiting Military Police and Army units....
Would be a stunning arrival on and a Day One purchase for yours truly from any territory.
