Default The Last Valley - the lost epic

One of the great epics is amazingly one of the most obscure. 1970's The Last Valley saw a strong cast, led by Michael Caine and Omar Sharif, under the direction of renowned novelist - James (Shogun) Clavell. Shot in 70mm and with a 6 track soundtrack for those presentations, The Last Valley is set in the 30 Years War in Germany which was a war fought across religious denominations - Catholic versus Protestant. Sharif plays Vogel, a former teacher turned refugee, fleeing from the massacre of his family during the infamous siege and sack of the town of Magdeburg. Fleeing horror after horror, he finds his way to a beautiful valley that seems to have completely escaped the ravages of the war....
Following Sharif into this valley is The Captain (Caine) who is leading a troop of mercenaries. They too are amazed at what they find there and the stage is set for one of cinema's greatest and most criminally unknown epics to unfold.
Great dialogue, assured direction from Clavell, superb performances from Caine and Sharif - backed up by a very strong supporting cast, The Last Valley takes neither side in the war but underscores the hypocrisy and atrocities committed by both, as well as some very incisive story telling re human nature..

Basically this film would simply be a knockout on , if the source was a 70mm print. Accompanying the film is probably John Barry's greatest movie score of all time, with music with a range that stretches from overwhelming and powerful to beautiful and soulful.
The first territory which releases this on from a 70mm source will get my buck, that's for sure.
