Default PS3 Upscaling Questions

I am having trouble figuring out if my PS3 is upscaling standard Def movies correctly or at all.

My 51" Sony TV (KP-51WS510) does not have an HDMI connection, but it has DVI. I purchased a ULTRA SERIES 800 HDMI TO DVI VIDEO (8') by Monster Cable, hoping that this will work in place of a regular HDMI cable. I played movies such as The Mummy Returns and Austin Powers in Goldmember, but I'm not sure if there is any improvement or if my eyes are playing tricks on me.

My TV can play every resolution from 480 to 1080i, and my PS3 is set to play 480 and 1080i only. Even when I had 720p set too, I did not see any difference.

Does anyone know if I'm doing things right or not?
