Default My PS3 games look horrible on my TV, am I doing something wrong?

I've fiddled with the calibration and my Blurays look great. But my PS3 games...? Not so much. It looks very jagged. And unpleasant.... Is there some way to remedy this issue? My TV isn't exactly amazing but I feel like I should be getting better images from it.

I've got a launch PS3 hooked up to a 42' Vizio LCD.... uhhh, the serial number escapes me. It's one of the first 120hz models.... Black frame, with a silver speaker attacked to the bottom.

I'd appreciate any help you guys could give me, thanks!

You should give us some additional info:
  • Shall I assume your TV is 1920x1080p?
  • What type of connection do you use?
  • What resolution have you set the PS3 to output?
  • Which games have you tried? Keep in mind that the vast majority of PS3 games run at 720p and need to be upscaled on a 1080p set which makes them look worse. Also anti-aliasing to smooth jaggies is not featured on most PS3 games.

Are you sure you're using an HDMI cable? Did you setup the PS3 video before playing the game?

yes, it's a native 1080p set. And I'm using HDMI for connection.

And what do you mean by "set up video"?

I've tried pretty much all the big titles, Rock Band 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Infamous, etc, etc.

Is the only way to get rid of jaggles by downgrading to a native 720 set or get an Xbox with better anti-aliasing?

By that he meant video options that allow you to set the output resolution, RGB type and so forth.

Two of the titles you mentioned use AA, and Infamous doesn't alias that much so there is something odd going on.

Make sure under video options you have both 720p and 1080p checked.

yeah, if you only have 1080p checked it'll drop it down to 480p

You also need to find out what the native resolution of your tv is, and if your tv achieves 1080p through internal upscaling or if it actually passes the 1080p signal as it is given.

In all honesty, the best bet is to run games closest to their native resolution, as well as the native resolution of your tv. I'd uncheck 1080p in your video options, and let it run at 720p and see if this helps. It can't hurt.

It's native 1080p. You know, the 1920x1080 (was that right?)

I have all the video setting on default. So like on/full/etc.

What's generally the best video setting for PS3 games? Maybe the PS3's internal scaling and the HDTV's is like clashing or something?
