Default PS3 Slim For This Holiday Season?

Seems like there have been more than just a few recent reports of the fabled PS3 Slim coming out over the last week.

The photos, if true, seem to be coming from a production line instead of simply some Photoshopped up fake photos. It is by far the most genuine view I've seen of the product and a brief video appeared on youtube as well.

Not sure what this will mean for the holidays, but if Sony has gotten production really figured out for the PS3, it could include a pretty significant price drop to go along with it.

Wish it was flat on top to make it more stackable, and wish they would put an IR receiver on it with full IR control built in.

$299 makes sense but no way any lower than that.

Everything we know about the fabled console redesign.
by Scott Lowe

July 14, 2009 - Before any product arrives on store shelves it is typically preceded by a several weeks, months, or even years of rumors, buzz, and speculation. Keeping track of a product's progress through the rumor mill can be a lot of trouble, so we've organized everything we know about the fabled PlayStation 3 Slim into one consolidated rumor roundup for your viewing pleasure. Without further ado, here's everything we know about the PS3 Slim thus far.

Photographic Catalyst
Rumor: PS3 Slim Photos Leaked - Posted on: May 14, 2009

PS3 Slim fever officially began in May of this year when leaked factory photos out of China set the internet ablaze. The photos, which were taken in an assembly line setting show casing components for what appeared to be a slimmed down PS3, were first posted Japanese gaming blog, GameColumn. The depth of the casing appeared to be comparable to that of the current-gen PS3, however, there seemed to be a significant reduction to the clearance of the product.

Other elements of the photographs included a revision to the device's finish, which appeared to be that of a textured matte finish on the PS3 Slim. Additionally, the logo on the casing is a departure from the typeset and titling of the system, going from a full readout of PlayStation 3 to simply PS3.

IGN Gets a Tip
Confirmation of the PS3 Slim? - Posted on May 15, 2009

Just a day after the allegedly leaked photos were posted online, IGN received a tip regarding the matter from a trustworthy GameStop employee who claimed to have discussed the photos with a Sony merchandizing representative. According to the employee's recount of the conversation, when asked about the photos, the Sony rep stated that he or she was surprised that the photos had been "released already." After realizing that the employee had been referring to the rumor, the representative quickly dismissed the subject. The representative's reaction was certainly peculiar and only compounded our suspicion that a legitimate PS3 Slim could be in the works.

Legal Action
The PS3 Slim Cease and Desist Order - Posted on May 19, 2009

In yet another development quickly following the release of the PS3 Slim photos, a Chinese legal firm issued a variety of media outlets cease and desist orders for the posted photos. The vague nature and lack of formal identification of the firm left many to question the authenticity of the request, however, it only further added to the flames of growing anticipation of the device.

An excerpt from the request reads:

We just find that the following web pages on your website contain some confidential document and photos, which were highly possibly illegally released and posted. We are investigating this violation and will bring all necessary legal actions regarding this matter. In order to protect the confidential information and prevent you from further legal issues and infringements, please immediately remove those pages and keep our request confidential. If you have any question regarding this issue, please feel free to contact us. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

After the requests were sent and subsequently posted by the receiving outlets, no further correspondence or legal action was posted.

Sony Responds
Koller Comments on PS3 Slim Rumors - Posted on June 9, 2009

After close to a month with no extensive comment on the matter from Sony, John Koller, Sony's Director of Hardware Marketing, had a bit more to say during an interview with Ars Technica. According to the interview, when asked about the PS3 Slim rumors, Koller had this to say:

"I think we have a tremendous story to tell today and I think the path that we're trying to lead is much different than Microsoft or Nintendo. We view a little bit of a different future. Who's going to get to the future first? I think that's a more interesting story than 'I found some packaging in China that may or may not...' you know, personally I don't see that as a story."

Ars Technica's Ben Kuchera, who interviewed Koller, remarked that the representative's body language became "adversarial" when asked to comment on the matter. An interesting development, indeed, but still a careful dodge of the subject by Sony.

Production Rumblings
Rumor: PS3 Slim in Production - Posted on June 30, 2009

While the original factory photos caused a massive stir of anticipation of a PS3 redesign, no formal timeline could be established, but a report from Economic Daily News shed some alleged light on the production schedule of the fabled console. According to their report, Sony had awarded several major production contracts to Taiwanese manufacturers for a smaller, lighter version of the PS3, with a bulk of the manufacturing deals going to Hon Hai Precision Industry Company Ltd.

Somewhat unbelievably, the report stated that the orders were expected to ship in July. If Sony were to indeed be receiving PS3 Slim orders as early as this month, many expect an announcement to arrive shortly and a release range of late July or August.

PS3 Slim Video Arrives on YouTube
Rumour: PS3 Slim 'Proof' Emerges - Posted on July 12, 2009

Just when we thought the PS3 Slim rumor train had been slowing, a video popped up on YouTube of a completed version of the redesigned console. The user who originally posted the video, known as TheLastDestroyer, claims to have found the console in an underground market in the Philippines, where it was allegedly being sold with a DualShock 3 controller for 20,000 Philippine Pesos, roughly $415 USD.

The authenticity of the video is, again, highly questionable, however, it only compounds the popular belief that the PS3 Slim is indeed real and in development.

It remains to be seen whether or not the PS3 Slim is real, however, if Sony is indeed producing a slimmed down variation of the console for a fall or winter retail availability, we would expect to hear something official within the next few months. For all the latest on the PS3 Slim, be sure to stay tuned to IGN.

Holiday Season? I thought we were hearing late July? I also see someone is saying September...? Sounds like this is all speculation to me. All we know for sure is that they indeed exist.

This seems odd to me, Slim would be cool especially if it fit in with the rest of my components better. But I think its time to drop the price of the current hardware, i fear if they do this they'll remove more features. If anything, it will be a Japan first thing I think.

I'd guess that there are a lot of factors that determine when they can release it. If it uses a smaller 45nm cell (probable) there might be constraints on production and yields. They are probably consolidating other electronics on fewer chips as well, so you have to see how quickly those can be produced in quantity, then there are all the other components to source out, maybe a cheaper Blu-ray drive, redesigned heat sink, fan, etc. And they have to do reliability testing to make sure it won't have a high failure rate. The last thing they need is a RROD equivalent problem. Then, they also have to manage the current stock of PS3s, without selling too many of them too far below cost and losing more money, or even sell out of them before the new model is ready in quantity.

If after all that, they have a PS3 they can sell for $300 that costs $300 or less to build, they will be in good shape for the holidays.
