Default PS3 $100 price cut in August??

IGN is reporting that, according to sources in the know, Sony is planning a price reduction of their PS3 in August..even though Sony has recently went on record at E3 that there will be no PS3 price reduction. Anybody know anything about this that they want to share and can maybe shed some light on this??

Thanks for all responses!

The big rumor is that they'll be releasing a slim version of the PS3 around August/September, that would coincide with the price cut rumor.

Also, Sony has always and will always deny future pricecuts. Announcing a price cut months before it actually happens would kill sales.

Yeah they use words like "We dont plan to cut prices at this time." But tommorow they could say "We have reevaluated our market position and decided on a price reduction".

Previous price cuts usually linked to be a ps3 with different/less features. Perhaps this $100 cut will be for the slim version someone mentioned above

I dont know if I would like to see a slim version. That, in all likely hood, means they would take the fan out (as they did for the slim PS2 some years back). That could lead to more overheating issues and cause more PS3's to be defective.

The current PS3 shape & size would take up 3 units in my mid atlantic rack with its correct face plate. I dont know how slim, there slim version would be but perhaps this would at least take up less shelf space(s). But I agree these components definitely need good exhaust fans/systems. I would much rather they created a normal "stackable" component box size.

Sounds like a good plan for Sony.

It seems like every month or two there is a new rumor about Sony dropping the PS3's price so I'll believe it when I see it.

Last I heard Sony is still losing money on each PS3 sold (or at best breaking even) so I kind of doubt it will happen unless it is on a new cheaper to produce model.

I'm with Tommy... I would prefer to see a normal rectangular shape that matches all my other components and allows for easy entertainment center placement over a fancy shape.

Yeah, obviously confirming today that there was a $100 price cut in august would ruin sales for a couple of months...

Yeah, you are right there. The non-stackability of it is really a pain. I'm wanting to get a second for a spare plus region a playability (mine is region B) and it is going to take too much room

If there is a price cut of $100 on the PS3 I would pick one up for sure. I am interested to see if a slim one is released because it does seem pretty bulky.
