Default PS3 Connection Question

I have not purchased a PS3 yet and was just wondering if anyone knows if this is possible. I have a Mitsubishi 55411 tv and a Yamaha RX-V2700 receiver.

I would need to run component video from the PS3 and was hoping to be able to run hdmi for the audio to take advantage of the PCM on the Blue-Ray discs.

Just wondering if the PS3 will allow that kind of hookup since HDMI does both video and audio.

Forgive my noobness.

Thanks in advance for any help

Ed

It might work but if not you can always just use the optical.

Yeah my tv only accepts component and I have heard that the only way to get pcm from the ps3 is through hdmi. Sorry that I was not more clear. Love to by a new tv and not have to worry about it but oh well. Just wondering if the ps3 allows running component for the video source and then use the hdmi like an optical for the audio.:confused

Well Ed I did some more looking into this and I am afraid that the PS3 doesnt do this. On the bright side you CAN get 2 channel PCM via optical that your reciever will matrix to 6.1 or 7.1 ect. This isnt true multi-channel but it will sound amazing as I have done it on some stuff. Also Blu-rays that have DTS Master Audio or TrueHD have 1.5 "core" tracks within them that use the max multi-channel bandwidth of the optical spec and it sounds amazing.

For the record I have the oposite problem as Ed does. I have an HDMI tv but not an HDMI reciever so I can't listen to multi-channel PCM either. The solution is the same as it usually is. Spend more money on new equipment. In Ed's case a new tv, in mine a new reciever. I plan on getting a new reciever this fall sometime when Sony gets some new ES stuff out there.

At any rate I still highly recommend the PS3 as it is the most powerful and refined piece of AV equipment I have ever owned. It also comes subsidised for only $600+tax. This is a huge bargin from where I am sitting.

I just bought a Yamaha HTR-6090 for $610 shipped because I wanted an
HDMI-processing receiver, but hated to give up my Yamaha HTR 5890. It
should be here in a day or two, I'll let you know how it works with Blu-Ray
and PS3. Based on several hours of looking around at different receiver
specs and reviews, it seems to offer great bang for the buck, and Yamaha
makes outstanding receivers IMO.

Well I started a thread on this over at AVS and a few people have said that this works and one guy says that it doesnt. The guys that claim that it works say that this is how they used to have it set up on their old tv's.

Guess if he ends up getting a PS3 he will find out for sure.

Well, I got my Yamaha HTR-6090 today, and set it up after work.

WOW, uncompressed audio for the super win! Very happy I decided
(rather impulsively one night at 3am with insomnia) to upgrade to an HDMI-
processing receiver. I really didn't know what I was missing. Yummy,
yummy, yummy.
