Default ps3 dvd upscale question

ok, just got the new firmware update which allows dvd upscaling. I really don't notice a difference between it when I turn it off or on? Is upscaling of the dvd really supposed to be noticable over the 480p normally? My TV's native is 720p, so not sure if it does some sort of upscaling on its own though.

I noticed a huge difference on XBR2 with Bad Boys II and Inside Man.

Play around with the settings.

I only tried one movie so far Serenity, it didn't look bad, actually looked real good in both cases. I'll try some others and see what I get.

Upscaling can turn water into Kool-aid, but it can't turn water into wine. Thats what Blu-ray is for.

I have a 1080P sony LCDTV and i notice almost no difference watching sd-dvds with the scaler set to normal. it looks only slightly better than it did without the update. However, I also have a 360 with the hd-dvd add-on and it does an INFINATELY BETTER JOB of upscaling than the ps3.

The 360 HD-DVD addon makes foxs "24" sd-dvds look near HD quality, It just looks like sd-dvd on the ps3. i am hugely disappointed and i hope sony can do a comparable job to microsoft with the next update.

lol your full of crap. Its a known factor that the PS3 normally in PQ for DVD has always been the same if not better then 360 because the 360. although does upscaling, has a very poor player inside.

I'm not full of crap! i think you are just bitter i worked out a trade with mentok for his glorious ps3 before you did!

im being totally honest. The only reason i use my vga connection for my 360 is for the upscaling. i was hoping the ps3 would do a better job of upscaling. then i could connect my pc permanently to the vga input on my tv and move the 360 back to component. now i will have to continue switching around. either that or it has something to do with the disc itself. im watching season 2 of 24 and flipping back and forth and the 360 is noticably better. could it be i dont want to use "normal?" or is it possible VGA just gives a better job of presenting upscaled images than HDMI?
