Default PS3 and Onkyo 605 issue

Hi,
I have a feeling this question has come up before now, so I apologize in advance...

I have my PS3 40GB connected by HDMI to an Onkyo 605 receiver. About 50% of the time when I quit playing a game I lose the picture completely. If I switch the receiver off and back on the picture comes back. Is this a common problem? Any fixes?

Thanks,
JScharn

I have a similar problem.. I've got my PS3 (20gb) hooked up to my TV via HDMI and sometimes when it's switching to a game/movie, the picture will go in and out with that snow fuzz screen. I have to hit the HDMI button on the TV's control twice for it to come back on.

Not sure if this is the same problem, but I sometimes lose the audio on my Onkyo -SR574 from the PS3 hooked up via HDMI. Says "No Signal" so I have to unplug and replug the HDMI cable in and it works.

I have the same setup as the OP but haven't encountered this problem. Try turning on the PS3 before you turn on the receiver and also re-seat the HDMI cable.

Thanks. I'll see if turning the PS3 on first makes a difference. I'd gotten used to turning on the receiver first so my HD-A2 could detect it. (Read that somewhere...)

By "re-seat"... Do you just mean unplug it and plug it back in? With everything powered off?

Do you use the PS3 for games or just for movies? I only have this problem with games for some reason.

Thanks again!

Yep, just unplug it and plug it back in. I've never encountered your problem before either with games or movies. But I will admit the PS3 generally gathers dust now since I don't have as much time to play games and watch all my movies on the 5K. Also, did you try another HDMI cable?

I have the 805 and I have had this happen a number of times. Like you, i just shut the reciever off and back on and then the image comes back. I switched around my HDMI cables and it seems to happen less often. But still, it does happen occasionally.

I have a 60Gig PS3 and the 605 and never had this issue.

I know that if I turn my TV off the 605 will stop giving any audio out from whatever source it is switched too. So there is some handshaking going on with HDMI that lets the receiver know what state various devices plugged into it are in.

Sounds like on your system the handshaking is messing up when you come out of a game.

Thanks, all, for the suggestions. For the last few days I've been making sure the PS3 is powered up before the receiver and I haven't had the problem, so maybe that's the fix.

Thanks again,

I've also got a 605. This happens to me once in a while when I'm switching between SD and HD content on a Blu-ray (the PS3 doesn't upscale that stuff, as you know, just switches output resolution). Every time that happens, I gather, the signal has to re-handshake itself, and once in a while it happens too often and my TV gets knocked out of the chain and reports "NO SIGNAL." It's just the nature of HDMI, as far as I can tell. Switching the TV to another source and back always fixes it.

(In my case, if there's any one thing to blame it's probably the TV. Until I got the receiver I couldn't use HDMI at all with either my PS3 or HD DVD player (!); the signal blinked in and out repeatedly until it disappeared completely. Reseating the cable worked for a good ten minutes, then it would start all over again. Thank you Onkyo.)
