I have the first line 60GB PS3 and I put in a Western Digital WD Scorpio 250GB 2.5 inch Laptop SATA Hard Drive a couple months back. Make sure your hard drive is SATA. I also remember reading somewhere a while back that it wasn't recommended putting more than a 300GB hard drive in...but it could only have been my model PS3. I know the official playstation site has installation instructions for your particular model that you might want to check out.

Last time I checked 320gb was the largest amount allowed in a ps3. This may have changed but I'd be surprised. Second like coheed said make sure it's a SATA drive. 3rd, when you turn on the ps3 and the operating system boots there is an option in the settings that says format the drive, do this. Finally, once you get the drive formated, and the system up and running, updating to firmware 2.53 (2.52 is old now) should be as simple as doing a "check for system updates".

I just recently put a 320GB Fujitsu in mine and it's working perfectly. I held off on a 500GB drive since they're too new and their reliability is less proven.

I've changed my hdd on my 60Gb PS3 with a 500Gb Samsung Spinpoint M6, and it's been working flawlessly for 4 months now.

The differences are the data transmission speeds - either 1.5Gb/sec or 3Gb/sec. The PS3 supports 1.5Gb/sec only so both types of drive (SATA-150 and SATA-300) still work in the PS3 however they will both run at 1.5GB/sec. You can get a drive that run at 7200 rpm instead of 5600 rpm and with a larger cache to get a better performance increase. 7200 rpm drives run more hot.

Incidentally, there is a list of compatible hard drives for the PS3 in a how-to guide for hard drive swaps for the PS3.

http://boardsus.playstation.com/play...hread.id=32840

If your drive is not in that list, then there could be an issue with that particular drive.

Hope that helps.
