External Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360--Is it finally going to happen?

Just came across this on n4g.com:

Tough to say whether this will be proven correct (finally), but who knows?

Would make a decent back up player, but the 360 doesn't have HDMI 1.3 out capabilities so no audiophiles will be making it their default

Interesting, so that means no HD audio?
No wonder when I was playing Batman Begins HD-DVD on the Xbox 360 add-on, I had it on True HD, but it never sounded that satisfying. So all along I thought I was listening to True HD I was really listening to some 640kps DD 5.1?

If you had DTS enabled, then the drive would read the Dolby TrueHD track send it to the 360 which would then output it at 1.5 mbps DTS. So you were basically maxed out at DD+/DTS 1.5. It would be interesting to see if on a DD+ track if anything were lost in the conversion to DTS.

I think M$ tends to keep things under wraps for as long as possible (ie: format war's end).

I don't know.... I don't think it will help Microsoft to add a bd drive... People don't really want that... They love that getting a PS3 on it's own has the added benefit, but if the console didn't come with it, I think most people would just spend a little extra money and get a standalone.
