Default PS2 games on PS3???

I dont usually post in this forum so forgive me if this question has been asked before. I do not own any PS2 games.....but there is one that I just read in Game Informer that has me really stoked!!! Fire Pro Wrestling Returns will be coming to the PS2 for the holidays, according to G.I. I played this game series when it first debuted in the 80's and got every single one there after(13). I have fond memories of playing this game with my roomate when I was in college and trying to find all the moves. Anyway...my question is how do the ps2 games play on the ps3??? I mean....is it recommended?? I only ask because when I had a ps2 I was told by a few people that if you played the ps1 games on the ps2 it would reduce the life of your system. Something to do with the laser that reads the game. I dont want to put a ps2 game in my ps3 and screw up my system...slowly but surely. Does anyone play ps2 games on your ps3??? Any intel regarding this would be greatly appericated. Thanks for all responses.

I play them all the time, and they work very well. It's best to leave them on normal, so they don't get widscreened and the upscaller is able to improve the image substantially. That being said, every game I've owned works well on it

the laser is affected whenever it reads any disc, but it was made to do that and if you are watching DVDs on the PS3 PS2 games will have the same affect as that since they are on DVDs

Thats because the Atari 2600 carts are not compatible with the PS3!!! Everybody knows that the Sega Genesis and Turbo Graphx 16 carts are the ones you should try, lol. Those carts will work.
